In recent years, Esports has grown from a niche hobby to a global phenomenon, captivating millions with its dynamic mix of strategy, skill, and teamwork. At Oklahoma Wesleyan University (OKWU), this evolution is championed by Alex Young, the Activities Director and Esports Head Coach, who brings a unique blend of passion, servant leadership, and vision to the university’s burgeoning esports program.

What Is Esports?

For those unfamiliar, esports refers to organized competitive gaming where players or teams face off in video games that demand a mix of mental sharpness, strategic thinking, and mechanical precision. As Alex Young explains, “Imagine a combination of the strategic depth of chess and the fast-paced coordination of a 3-on-3 basketball game, all unfolding in the digital arena.”

While it might not demand physical endurance like traditional sports, esports requires unparalleled mental discipline, focus, and adaptability—qualities that resonate with OKWU’s emphasis on holistic growth.

Alex Young: A Leader by Example

Alex Young, an OKWU alumnus from Colby, Kansas, joined the university’s staff in 2020, initially as the Intramural Director, before transitioning to his current role. His journey with the esports program began in spring 2024, and in just under a year, he has already made a lasting impact. Under his leadership, the Rocket League team reached the national semifinals in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) this past spring, a remarkable milestone for the program.

Young’s approach to leadership is deeply rooted in servant leadership and intentional relationship-building. “The thing I love about working at OKWU is getting to invest in students,” he shares. “I love building relationships and discipling students as they prepare themselves for their careers.” Whether it’s organizing team Bible studies, fostering camaraderie through shared experiences, or encouraging players to balance gaming with academics and spiritual growth, Young’s focus extends far beyond the screen.

What Sets OKWU Esports Apart?

Unlike many collegiate esports programs that prioritize gaming above all else, OKWU’s philosophy revolves around balance and intentionality. Young emphasizes the importance of “winning in the classroom” before excelling online, cultivating a culture where students strive for excellence in all areas of life.

Currently, the program’s strongest title is Rocket League, but the team also competes in Valorant and League of Legends, with plans to expand into games like Marvel Rivals and Rainbow Six Siege. Beyond competition, the program is developing a content creation team to engage with broader audiences through platforms like Twitch, short-form content, and vlogs—opening doors to career opportunities in fields like digital media, graphic design, and production.

The Value of Esports in Higher Education

Esports offers students more than just an opportunity to compete; it’s a gateway to developing critical life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and strategic thinking. Additionally, the industry’s rapid growth presents career paths in areas like game design, event management, and digital content creation.

At OKWU, these opportunities are further enriched by the program’s focus on faith. “Jesus went to people and showed that he cared about them, then was able to speak truth into their lives,” Young explains. “Esports is another common ground to connect and build relationships with people.” By integrating faith into the program, OKWU creates a unique environment where students can grow as competitors and as individuals grounded in their values.

Building the Future of OKWU Esports

Looking ahead, Young envisions a thriving esports program that develops leaders both in and out of the gaming world. His goals include forming competitive teams for games like Overwatch and Rainbow Six Siege, as well as expanding the content creation side of the program. But beyond these tangible milestones, his ultimate vision is to “develop leaders and grow people,” helping students excel in their areas of interest while preparing them for life beyond college.

At its core, the OKWU esports program embodies the university’s mission to foster holistic growth. With Alex Young at the helm, the team is not only making waves in the competitive gaming scene but also cultivating a community where students can thrive spiritually, academically, and personally.

“OKWU is a place of opportunity. If you are willing to push yourself and take chances, you will grow in all areas of life in a way that sets you apart.”

A Call to Join the Journey

For prospective students considering OKWU, the esports program offers an unparalleled opportunity to be part of something innovative and impactful. As Young puts it, “OKWU is a place of opportunity. If you are willing to push yourself and take chances, you will grow in all areas of life in a way that sets you apart.

Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or someone intrigued by the possibilities of esports, OKWU’s program invites you to be part of a movement that values both competition and community, under the guidance of a coach who leads with heart and purpose. Together, the team is proving that esports is not just about gaming—it’s about growth, connection, and unlocking potential.
