    OKWU Prep FAQs

    blank first
What is the difference between concurrent and dual enrollment?

Concurrent enrollment is when college courses are taken by high school students for college credit.

Dual enrollment is when college courses are taken by high school students for credit in both high school and college.

Will all courses completed through OKWU Prep count toward high school requirements?

No.  Each school district sets their own requirements for which college courses count for high school credit.  Students should work with their high school counselor to verify the college course will count for high school credit.

Will all courses completed through OKWU Prep transfer to other universities?

OKWU is a regionally accredited university through the Higher Learning Commission.  Most courses taken at a regionally accredited school and completed with a grade of C or better are transferable to other regionally accredited schools.

    What courses are available?

Course availability can be found on the OKWU Prep website.  High school students are encouraged to take common general education courses as these courses apply to all degrees at a variety of universities.  Examples include: composition 1 and 2, communications/speech, history, government, psychology, college algebra, etc.

If a course is taken that is not required as part of the chosen degree, the credits are generally able to be used toward electives.

    How much do courses cost?

OKWU Prep courses are $95 per credit hour, which is $285 per three-hour course.  There are no additional fees.  Most online courses include books.  If a course is taken on campus, books are not included in the credit hour cost.  Some universities offer free concurrent tuition, but most of the time fees are still charged.

When is payment due for OKWU Prep courses?

Students will receive an invoice for their courses approximately two weeks after the start of each semester.  The total amount is due upon receipt.

Will I receive a refund if I drop an OKWU Prep course?

Concurrent students who drop a course prior to the start date will receive a refund.  No refunds will be issued after the start date of courses.

What if I need to drop a course?

Courses may be dropped during the add/drop period, which is generally the first two weeks of the semester.  If a course is dropped during this time, the course will not appear on the student’s official transcript.  No refunds will be given once courses start. After the add/drop period, students may withdraw from a course. A “W” and the course name will appear on the student’s transcript, but the student’s GPA will not be negatively impacted, unless they receive a withdraw failing “WF.”  The academic calendar, located in the university catalog provides the specific dates for: add/drop, withdraw (W), and withdraw passing (WP) or withdraw failing (WF).

How do I request a drop or withdrawal?

OKWU Prep students can reach out to their assigned OKWU Prep advisor, or send an email to the OKWUPrep@okwu.edu to request a drop or withdrawal.  At the time of the request, it should be made clear what the student’s options are at that point in the semester.

    What are the application requirements?

Students classified as a high school junior or senior are eligible to take OKWU Prep courses.  Details available on the OKWU Prep site.

Students attending public or private high schools must have/be:

    • Ready to graduate within two academic years, and
    • At least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on an approved transcript

Students who are schooled at home must have/be:

    • At least 16 years old, and
    • At least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on an approved transcript
How many credits can I earn each semester?

Students are able to earn up to 12 credit hours per semester, which is the equivalent of four courses at three credit hours each.  A policy exception will be considered for students taking a science course with lab wishing to earn 13 credits.

What is considered a passing grade?

While a “D-” is considered a passing grade, most universities will not transfer credits for a course in which the student earned lower than a C-.

Is there a minimum GPA required to stay enrolled?

OKWU Prep students must maintain a cGPA of 2.0 or greater and a term GPA of 2.0 or greater to continue taking courses at OKWU.

Students not maintaining this GPA are prevented from taking additional courses from OWKU during high school.

What if I need help in my courses?

Every professor is required to have office hours.  Students should reach out to their professor and request help during the professor’s office hours.

The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) is available to all students including OKWU Prep.  ACE offers tutoring, writing assistance and other academic assistance.  All of these services are available to students at no additional cost.

When do college classes start and end?

High school students taking college courses follow the university academic calendar for their college courses.  Semester breaks will often be different than high school breaks.  The academic calendar can be found in the annual university catalog. NOTE:  If you are taking an on-campus course, your final may be offered at a different time than the actual course.

How does the proctoring for self-paced online courses operate?

Midterm and final exams for self-paced on-line courses require the use of a proctoring service.

    You will need:

    • Fully charged phone with the camera enabled.
    • WiFi connectivity
    • Computer for completing the exam
    • Mobile link and camera link sent to you by the MonitorEDU agent
    • Quiet room, as you are required to have the volume up on your phone

    You will NOT:

    • Be asked to download anything.
    • Be allowed anything in the testing area that is prohibited.

The Knowledge Base within the online class will provide more information. This can be found by selecting the red question mark.
The MonitorEDU Proctoring section will provide the information needed.

How does a college course impact my high school transcript and GPA?

Students should work with their high school counselor to determine the exact impact the course will have on their high school transcript.

    These are general guidelines:

    • Student is taking a college course, but does not need the course to graduate from high school AND does not need the course to be counted as part of the 6 required courses to be considered enrolled by the state. These courses likely do not need to be added to the student’s high school transcript and would not impact their high school GPA.
    • Student is taking a college course and needs the course to meet a high school graduation requirements AND/OR needs the course to be considered enrolled by the state. These courses will be added to the high school transcript and will impact the high school GPA. While the letter grade earned needs to be the same, the high school may elect to weight the college grade similar to an AP course.

OKWU does not determine or have authority over high school transcripts and GPAs. Students must work with their high school counselor to determine the impact of a college course on their high school transcript.
