On November 11, 34 students in the School of Ministry and Christian Thought joined four members of the faculty to participate in the School’s Service Day project.
The group served at Mary Martha Outreach, a ministry in Bartlesville associated with the Eastern Oklahoma Catholic Charities. Mary Martha Outreach serves over 1,000 people weekly with food, clothing, and other needed items.
“For us, the purpose of events like this is not merely to help a worthy charity,” said Dr. Joshua McNall, associate professor of pastoral theology. “We also want to bake in servant leadership as the heartbeat of Jesus for those going into vocational ministry.”
The majority of students and faculty unboxed hundreds of coats, removed the packaging, and sorted them by size. Another group of students helped paint an office. Mary Martha’s volunteer coordinator was extravagant in her praise for the hard work of the OKWU students.
The coats will be given to students in Bartlesville and Dewey.
“This service day reminded me that there is a lot more to life and ministry than just the classroom. It’s all around us just waiting for us to get involved,” said Kylie Bostwick, an OKWU student.
The School of Ministry and Christian Thought participates in a Service Day each semester.
