Function of Job

This position proactively manages all aspects of the university’s physical plant assets, including the necessary financial and human resources. This role works directly with senior management to compose the university facilities strategy. They are the internal champion of the Buildings & Grounds department and represents the department with all other internal constituencies.

The Buildings and Grounds department maintains approximately 285,000 square feet of building space on approximately 160 acres, which consists of the main campus, athletic fields (baseball, soccer, and softball), off-campus housing, and nature study.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Vice President of Student Affairs.

This position manages all personnel who work for the Buildings and Grounds department, including full-time, part-time, and student workers. This would include groundskeepers, maintenance technicians, administrative support, and contracted custodial workers.

  • Responsible for planning maintenance upkeep of university facilities.
  • Direct and document routine preventive maintenance to ensure that building systems operate efficiently and the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate, including roofs. Participate in maintenance tasks when necessary.
  • Examine facilities and analyze information to determine needed installations, services, or repairs.
  • Coordinate and assign work orders and, when needed, respond to work order requests.
  • Arrange for and provide 24/7 emergency response.
  • Determine schedules, sequences, and assignments for work activities based on work priority, budget, equipment quantity, and personnel skill.
  • Coordinate and oversee all manpower for the Buildings and Grounds department, including student workers and subcontractors.
  • Inspect or review projects to monitor compliance with building and safety codes or other regulations.
  • Coordinate B&G personnel meetings
  • Monitor employees’ work levels and review work performance.
  • Conduct or arrange for worker training in safety, repair, or maintenance techniques, operational procedures, or equipment use.
  • Help Coordinate requested set-ups
  • Supervise disposal of hazardous material.
  • Manage, maintain, and repair the motor pool fleet.
  • Oversee fleet vehicle and work order systems.
  • Responsible for planning, design, and construction management of renovations and new facilities.
  • Provide estimates for projects and computer renderings.
  • Prepare and manage the department budget.
  • Prepare and manage the facilities’ capital budget
  • Prepare expense reports
  • Other duties as assigned
